Hi Christine—thanks for this list! I’d like to suggest Craigardan.org in the Adirondacks as an addition, for a highly subsidized interdisciplinary residency program in a glorious mountaintop location, with individual artist studios and food shares from its own farm. It’s really special.
What a great list. Hedgebrook is a wonderful residency! I've not been there as a resident, but worked there for a few months and now live a (long) stones throw from it. They take very good care of their writers.
It’s pretty special. At least we here on Whidbey think so. I looked at their website and they do take trans women and those who identify as women, if you want to edit your listing for them. South Whidbey is a pretty welcoming place in general.
Lazarus, I respectfully have to disagree. There are a lot of fine residency programs that have to charge something to keep running. I’ve been on the staff and/or board of several and the real cost to host artists is typically much higher than what they charge. It’s a labor of love for most nonprofit arts orgs.
It really depends - some ask for $20-35/day for meals, others don't require a fee. Others will charge a thousand or more for a week's stay. Most, if not all, can't cover travel to and from the residency. But some do have scholarships.
Some of the residencies charge a small daily fee - probably because they don't have a large endowment, but it's certainly ideal if you can get most if not all of your expenses paid.

Thank you, Kate! I will add this to the list soon. I do appreciate it.
What a generous act. Thank you!

Thanks for this list!
You're most welcome!
On such a frigid Monday, it’s fun to dream of summer days—writing! Thank you for this!
My pleasure, Melissa!
I’ve been told , have also discovered , one should never pay a thing for a residency, I also feel if you do have to pay it should be very little .
