Hello new and returning Bookish subscribers,
I published a shorter version of this residency list a little less than two years ago, but I’ve since learned of a few more residencies, and several are presently open for applications. The time seemed right for an update.
Many writers and artists, especially those with familial or work-related obligations that make it difficult to get writing or artmaking done at home, opt to apply for residencies that might range from a few days to as many as two months.
Some of the residencies you’ll find contact information for below are generously funded and require a small fee from the writer or artist; others don’t have as much of an endowment to support fellows, and those receiving residencies will, in some cases, need to pay for most of the room and board-related expenses from their own pockets.

Postscript:
Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Geraldine Brooks has a new book out, the memoir Memorial Days, which I reviewed recently for Newcity Lit. Brooks was at home in Martha’s Vineyard on Memorial Day 2019 when she received a call informing her that her husband of 35 years, Tony Horwitz, had died suddenly in Washington D.C. while on tour to promote his new book.
If you’re in the Los Angeles area, please join Kurt Baumeister and me on Wednesday, March 12, 6 PM, at Village Well Books in 9900 Culver Blvd., Culver City. We’ll be discussing his engrossing, darkly comic, and politically prescient new novel Twilight of the Gods.
Hi Christine—thanks for this list! I’d like to suggest Craigardan.org in the Adirondacks as an addition, for a highly subsidized interdisciplinary residency program in a glorious mountaintop location, with individual artist studios and food shares from its own farm. It’s really special.
What a generous act. Thank you!
