He's fine now, thanks. He and his parter are staying at a friend's place in Koreatown, still waiting to see if their house survived. If it did, what a bizarre thought to go back there and live amidst the devastation.

It definitely would be. I hope you know more soon.

Glad you are safe. How close are you to the fires, Christine?

A few miles south of the Eaton fire. We could see it burning outside our windows when it started but then clouds of smoke began to obscure it. It's 15% contained and has burned more than 14K acres, Watch Duty tells me.

That's still too close. I didn't reach out because I didn't know if you and yours were evacuating and seeking safety. I figured you would have more important things on your mind than responding to me while all this is raging.

You're very kind, Laura - we are so relieved, needless to say, that we were able to stay where are. And of course I hope that continues to be the case.

Your description of L.A.'s devastation is spot-on, and your list of aid resources is truly generous. I hope that you continue to stay safe. xo

My dear Christine, stay safe! I remember the CZU wildfire that burned in the Santa Cruz mountains a few years back. The smell, the ashes, it was hard to bear, even if we were safe (we actually hosted evacuated friends...). I'm also looking forward to read your interview with Zeeva - her book sounds really interesting! Here's a question: Does she pronounce her name Zeeva as in Geek - or as in Zeh-Eva?

"Zee-vah," I think, is the correct pronunciation, Dana.
