Now open for submissions: Associated Writers and Writing Program’s annual book contests. A novel, a story collection, a poetry collection, and a work of nonfiction (an essay collection, long-form researched nonfiction, braided narratives—as long as it is nonfiction) are selected by a judge in each category. Publication and a cash prize are likewise awarded in each category. Guidelines and submission page are accessible here.
A couple of spaces remain for the May 18-24, 2025 writing retreat I’m leading in Bordeaux, France, hosted by Foreword Retreats. All genres and levels of experience are welcome. Registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 10, 2025.

Welcome to new and returning subscribers,
Happy new year, and may you find more time to read and write than you hope to in 2025. ☀️
I generally begin each month’s agent list with a couple of submission opportunities before the paywall intrudes, but for this first compendium of the year, I’m including the first entry.
A preview of last month’s agent list is available here. Monthly and annual subscriptions are 25% off this month.

Interests: adult and YA fiction. Laura is a character-driven reader seeking narratives with emotional depth and compelling stakes. She's interested in diversity in all of its forms across the genres noted below:
In adult fiction: fantasy (inspired by historical/cultural events and folklore, in-depth world-building and authentic characterizations, secondary worlds, ensemble casts and solo protagonists, epic/high and soft/low, and horror); historical fiction (spotlight on feminism, STEM, spies and code-breaking, non-European and/or little-known eras, parallel narratives), and women's fiction (rom-coms, millennial-driven, slice of life, compelling obstacles and moral dilemmas).
In YA: contemporary realistic fiction (rom-coms, fierce feminists, strong family/friendship dynamics, lighthearted and humorous, interesting jobs/hobbies, hopeful) and fantasy (fractured fairy tales, culturally-influenced folklore, historically-inspired, lush world-building, horror).
