Today’s post is July’s list of agents currently accepting queries. A preview of last month’s can be found here. These lists are generally the only paywalled posts you’ll find in your inbox.

First, a few submission opportunities:

Opening soon: The Academy of American Poets First Book Award - (48-100 pp - single spaced) - submission period: July 8 - September 1 - $5,000 prize + publication

Now open: Drue Heinz Prize, a short story collection or a collection with stories and (a) novella(s) (150-300 pp - double-spaced). Submission deadline: July 31 (requires some prior publication. Guidelines have changed significantly this year, and the award has been increased from $15,000 to $25,000).

Iowa Short Fiction Awards (short story collection - at least 150 double-spaced pp) - prizes awarded to two collections of stories - for writers who haven’t yet published a book-length work of fiction (an exception is made for small print-run, self-published work - see guidelines linked to above). Submission deadline: August 31.

Looking ahead: Yale Younger Poets competition (48-64 pp - now open to debut poets of any age with no prior published collection, but a chapbook is acceptable). Annual submission period is October 1 – November 15.

A recent outdoor seminar on the query letter. Students were prone to flying off or scurrying away at random intervals. The squirrel got a C- (worst ADHD of the bunch).
